Most homeowners imagine calling a contractor in September and having a kitchen done before Thanksgiving. In practice, the math rarely works that way. A mid-range remodel with new cabinets requires 3 to 5 weeks for cabinet delivery alone after the order is placed. Add permit processing time in cities like Anaheim or Oakland, and the pre-construction phase easily runs 4 to 6 weeks before a single wall is opened.
If your project involves a full gut renovation with custom cabinetry, the window needs to open even earlier. Custom cabinets can take 8 to 14 weeks from order to delivery. That puts your order date in June or July to hit a November finish.
This is the point to call (210) 401-4006 and talk through your project. Fall is a secondary busy season. Contractors booking holiday-ready projects start filling their calendars in late summer, and the best crews are typically scheduled out 6 to 8 weeks. Getting on the calendar early is the single most important step.
Cabinet and countertop lead times are the most common source of delay in fall remodels. Confirming your material selections at this stage, before the contract is signed, prevents the most common mid-project slowdown. Your contractor should be able to advise on in-stock vs. special-order options.
Your contractor should submit permit applications the day the contract is signed. Most California cities require a building permit for any electrical, plumbing, or structural work. In Fresno and Bakersfield, over-the-counter permits can be issued in a week. In busier permit offices like Long Beach or Oakland, plan for 3 to 6 weeks. Cabinets should be ordered at this point to arrive in time for the construction phase.
By now, permits should be in progress and materials on order. This is the time to confirm the exact construction start date with your contractor and begin household preparation.
A folding table, microwave, mini-fridge, and electric kettle in a spare room, garage, or living area makes the construction phase far more manageable, especially with holiday cooking approaching. Pack up kitchen contents, label boxes clearly, and move breakables to a safe location before demolition day.
Even well-planned fall remodels can slip if any of these factors appear. Your contractor should flag these risks upfront.
